Grocery Shopping Tips

November 5, 2007 21:26 by jwendl

I have recently been told that I have what they call border-line high Cholesterol and it made me re-evaluate what foods I choose at the grocery store. Previously I was paying attention to just foods which did not include high fructose corn syrup because of research which shows that man made corn syrup leads to really high upper and low downer feelings in people. You should try this as an exercise sometime in the grocery store, just take the food you normally purchase and see if high fructose corn syrup is one of the top five items on the ingredients list.

The main point of this post is that now not only do I have to pay attention to high fructose corn syrup, but now I get to pay attention to foods with lower Cholesterol. This means goodbye to butter, to string cheese, to whole milk and to nice juicy steaks. So far I have been doing quite well in the past few grocery trips in keeping track of what I eat. The only thing that I really cheat on is the whole milk, I just cannot go without it. So as a compromise, my wife and I agreed to have less than one glass per day.

In the end, we are all in control of how we look, feel and our overall health. I encourage everyone who may read this to read the labels when they go grocery shopping and educate yourself on what each item in the ingredients list means. Look at the nutrition charts and make sure you are not taking in too much trans fat or Cholesterol.

The Summer Wrap-Up

September 2, 2007 18:27 by jwendl

I thought I would give the majority of the online community my summary of the summer of 2007. This summer was supposed to be a nice relaxing moment where I could relax and work part time on getting caught up with school work. Then I got hired by Wells Fargo in an excellent start up (get my foot in the door) position in their Business Payroll business unit. Wells Fargo has been a very interesting experience for me and I am glad to be a part of a very active team.

I went to three different weekend camping trips. The one trip was with my family and was very successful. We went tubing down the Cannon River and had ourselves a very nice time. There was two trips this summer with my friends. The first such trip was out at a state park, we had fun and everything was nice and sunny. This was the first camping trip where I was able to cook very nice steak sirloins and everyone was happy. The last such trip this summer was during the flooding season during this summer. While everyone had fun, we ended up leaving early because of the chance that we wouldn't be able to leave if the rain got worse.

Then there was the State Fair this summer. I ended up going with my Grandfather and several of my siblings. We spent eight hours eating, eating and more eating during the great Minnesota get together. We also had a separate trip this summer with my Grandfather to Grand Casino Millacs where we gambled away. The end result of this gambling yield my wife and I +$40.

As for my project work, this has been lacking a bit. There has been so much family activity going on lately, that I haven't had a moment to sit down and arrange myself in this area. Hopefully this Fall I am able to duck my head down and dig right into the project work I have to fulfill yet.

The 35W Bridge in Minnesota

August 1, 2007 21:58 by jwendl
The bridge that crossed the Mississippi River along 35W collapsed today. There were many injured and a few dead. I would like to say that Pam and myself are ok, and so are the family members, friends an co-workers that I know. Our thoughts go out to those who lost someone today.

The Start of a New Career

July 1, 2007 22:26 by jwendl

Tomorrow is the first day of the start of my new career. I always thought it would be a position based on software engineering or something similar. Instead I will be a Business Systems Consultant at Wells Fargo. I may have shot myself in the foot because of how professional of a setting it will be, but we will just have to wait and see how everything turns out. I never did see myself as an organized, professional member of society.

The major difficulty in this time of change is that I end up with such a deep fear and anticipation. I end up losing quite a bit of sleep and end up being more hyper than a 12 year old boy on pixie sticks. The largest fear I have with this new position is the question of it being the right thing for me. Many people that I have graduated with and have worked with ended up in some form of development position where their influence is noticed by others. They have even ended up with positions of such prestege and awe. For example; Microsoft, Google, Cray Research, Larson Allen, Thomson West, and the State of Minnesota. There are even a few that I know who are part of fairly successful startups (Megatechtronium). This makes me dearly jealous, but also happy to see that they got the success they deserve.

When I was in high school at the National Championships for Chess in 1995 (Here for those interested), I would remember hearing the ticking of the clocks and the dead silence in the room. Then after 10 excruciating minutes I would hear people to the left of me and to the right of me claim "Check Mate". At this moment I would looked at my board and made my move to sacrifice my Queen. In chess, they say it is only the craziest of individuals who give up a position to win the game. I guess this is how I tend to live life willing to sacrifice the glory and power to go with the option that suits me best.

If you don't catch the analogy here, I would not worry about it. My brain tends to think in very odd ways, especially when I am sleep deprived.

June 8, 2007 13:41 by jwendl

Another Video game that I can not wait till it gets released is called Overlord. You can read the preview of it at this url : Gamespot. I just watched the trailer and it looks really fun. I will most likely buy it on the 360, but it will be released for the PC too.

End of the Semester

May 19, 2007 23:31 by jwendl

The end of the Spring Semester has arrived. I am at the point now where I do not have any more courses to take. I have a few projects to finish up hopefully during the summer time. There are two things I would like to note about this semester. The first being that it was very challenging, that is three of my courses made me think constantly and stretched my thought out beyond the limits that I thought it could travel. The second is that while I may be good at the class content, I totally suck at exams.

Another interesting point to make about right now, is that it is 12:30 am on a Sunday morning, and on channel 6 (Regional Channel or whatever) my professor for Intellectual History (HIST 3282) is being interviewed about his ideas of the Philosophical Discourse of Modernity. I got a B in his class this semester and boy was that a tough B to get.

So a question to you as the reader: Do you attend, visit, watch, read or admire any works done by any professor's that you have taken courses with? So far on my list has:

These are professors that have left a definite impression on me and have changed the way I think and the way I react to the respective topics they have taught.

Flash Game, The Last Stand

April 29, 2007 13:43 by jwendl

I am not much of a fan of online flash games, but I ran across one that is really interesting. I always enjoy blowing up Zombies.

So here you have it "The Last Stand" by CON Artists. See how many days you can last, the first time I played I only lasted 3 days. I think I lost my "gaming edge" thanks to the 3 years I played World of Warcraft.

Assasains Creed and Blue Dragon

April 27, 2007 17:09 by jwendl

I purchased Neverwinter Nights 2 recently and it got me thinking about how many games I am anticipating this year.

One game of worthy mention is for the Xbox 360, entitled Assassins Creed which I cannot wait for it's September supposed release date.

I just think the new ubisoft engine that they have developed for this game is going to be phenominal!

Then of course there is another Xbox 360 game comming out that I really can't wait for. The name is Blue Dragon and it seems to be one of the best RPG's that is released on the 360 ... /sarcasm

I am just confused as to why the PC is falling so far behind, oh wait World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Any MMO. I want a NEW Fantasy RPG darn it!

Motorola Q Phone and Other Various Toys

April 26, 2007 01:35 by jwendl

I just cancelled my service with Sprint recently and switched over to Verizon. This is sort of a big change for me as I have been a Sprint customer for almost 8 years now. The major draw, a new phone of course.

8097

I am now the proud owner of a Motorola Q phone. So far I have only installed Pocket PuTTy and Nethack on it.

I have also written an application that takes contacts from vCard format (provided by PHP iAddressbook) and inserts them into Microsoft Outlook 2003. Then it takes the iCal file format provided by Mozilla Sunbird and PHP iCalendar and inserts that into Outlook.

Then after running my custom application, all I have to do is plug the phone in and in about 5 - 10 minutes of sync'ing I have everything on my phone. This is a huge draw for me as I have way too many contacts and way too many events going on to remember anymore.

If you are interested portions of the source code are provided at :

Please note that I did not include the vCard or iCal classes as there are links to both of them included inside the frmMain.cs file (as I didn't write them).
