If you have having issues connecting with people in Baldur's Gate 2 you will need to read the FAQ carefully. They used DirectPlay (from Direct X) to do the multiplayer. It requires both inbound and outbound ports forwarded for both sides of the game. Additionally, It requires these port settings on anything higher than Windows XP SP 2.

TCP: 2300 - 2400, 6073, 47000 - 49000

UDP: 2300 - 2400, 6073, 47000 - 49000

this should work right ?

Yeah, this should work. When I looked at my Router logs I noticed that it was hitting on ports around 47k to 49k it is quite possible that DirectX Network Play could operate differently on your machine, maybe if you open the port 49k beyond to port 55k or so, then it should catch it.

Basically you have to play things a little bit by ear.

Yeah that looks right. I am not sure why we need such a big upper bound on port numbers. I think it has something to do with newer versions of Direct X. They must have opened up more ports to the service.

It's kind of hard to get people to play multiplayer Baldur's Gate(I use GameRanger). I'm just curious... how many people still play Baldur's Gate 2?

Yes, it is difficult to get anyone else to play. I don't think there is a large community for this game anymore.

In order to play with other people you would need to know the external IP (Internet) address of the other person you want to play with. They did have a GameSpy software to do this for you, but I am not sure that service works anymore.

You can go to a website like this : http://www.alexnolan.net/ip/ and get the external IP address of you and your buddy you want to play with. These are the numbers that you use when setting up a connected game.

BG2 is the best computer RPG of all time (I'd say fallout 2 is second). Even after more than a decade since its release, there are still fans everywhere around the world playing it. I'm from Malaysia and i still play BG2 but only in single player mode. 3D RPG games nowadays just lack something..

I would agree with you. 3D RPG games have zero story. My favorite part of BG2 was when the group attacks a group of monsters and then dies, then it says "loading game" and goes back to let you choose to not fight that group of monsters.

PS - deleted the extra comments. Something is still goofy with the blog software.

I've recently tried Dragon Age and IMHO i think it's very rich with content and story. What that doesn't sink in for me is the 3D view which can be cumbersome to pan and rotate at times. Plus, i just can't seem to get use to the combat system.

Btw, have you tried soloing through BG2? A really challenging and satisfying experience!
